BNCP Scintellect- A research Initiative for Undergraduates
BNCP is an institute where creativity and innovation are valued and encouraged. We have instituted an undergraduate research review program titled “BNCP SCINTELLECT 2016” this year to create, nurture and promote research and review activity in our undergraduate students. Allowing our students to participate in undergraduate research and review ignites their intellectual curiosity, satisfies their thirst for discovery and provides an outlet for their creative initiatives. A huge amount of learning occurs when undergraduate students do research – learning that does not happen during traditional coursework. Classroom knowledge is reinforced and more completely assimilated when students are given the opportunity to apply that knowledge. In line with this, an interactive induction session was organized on July 02, 2016. Dr. Munira Momin, I/c Principal introduced the concept of undergraduate research and review to the students and elaborated on the benefits and process of this program. This was followed by short presentations by the HODs of the various departments highlighting the research activities conducted in their departments. The undergraduate students were given a snapshot view of the research facilities and projects available for their participation. They were also given an overview of writing review papers with faculty mentors and publishing them in good impact factor journals.
Research and review leads to a better understanding and a deeper appreciation of a particular subject. Students are more aware and clear about their career goals after they participate in research. This activity provides a platform to do some of the thinking, researching and writing that a scientist conventionally does. Research is also a significant confidence booster. The more students are intellectually stimulated and challenged, the greater their sense of accomplishment upon completion of the project. Establishing a relationship with a faculty mentor is another big advantage of undergraduate participation in research. It has been shown to increase retention and graduation rates. Students benefit from the wisdom, knowledge and experience of a mentor, while faculty members benefit from the questions students ask, the discoveries they make and the energy they bring to the project. In addition, this initiative will also help make undergraduate resumes more attractive to higher education institutes and prospective employers and gives faculty mentors the ability to write more detailed letters of recommendation.
