Overview
The department of Pharmaceutical chemistry, Quality Assurance and Pharmaceutical analysis is involved in taking lectures and practical laboratory sessions for the undergraduate and post graduate courses. The courses are well-structured and have a broad-based inclusive syllabus. The curriculum includes extensive lectures and laboratory sessions to ensure that students can connect theory to practice and apply their theoretical knowledge to industry-relevant problems.
Pharmaceutical chemistry forms the base for understanding the fundamental concepts of life and health sciences. The undergraduate course focusses on subjects such as biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, pharmaceutical medicinal chemistry, computer-aided drug design and pharmaceutical analysis.
The department has two postgraduate courses specializing in Quality Assurance and Pharmaceutical Analysis. The Quality Assurance specialization ensures that the students are trained in a GLP-compliant environment to perform analytical, regulatory, and quality functions in the pharmaceutical and allied industries. This course is designed to impart fundamental knowledge and concepts about various quality management principles and systems utilized in the manufacturing industry. It also aids in understanding the quality evaluation in the pharmaceutical industries and includes concepts of cGMP, stability testing of drug substances and products, statistical approaches for quality, hazard assessment, concepts of equipment qualification, quality by design and process analytical technology.
The field of pharmaceutical analysis is highly dynamic and liaisons with different phases of drug development, manufacturing, marketing, preclinical and clinical research, environmental studies and disease diagnosis. The curriculum ensures that the students are educated with the latest developments with a focus on processes of identification, quantification and purification of drug substances and products, impurity profiling and structure elucidation of isolated natural and synthetic new chemical entities. The students are trained for the quality assurance and quality control functions related to pharmaceuticals, food products, herbal products, cosmeceuticals, nutraceuticals and medical devices. Students are taught classical and modern analytical techniques including the application of sophisticated instruments such as GC, HPLC, NMR, GC-MS and LC-MS in pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic and nutraceutical domains.
The department of Pharmaceutical chemistry offers Ph.D. programme for research students.
